Our stand this year featured an Exmoor pony Sweetcombe Sunbird (Birdy) with her three week old colt foal Sunny Boy, lent by members Sue and Trevor Glasper of Branscombe. The foal attracted a lot of interest on the Saturday when it was the subject of the guess the weight competition. Sue and Trevor have 10 brood mares on steep farmland a mile from the East Devon coast. Exmoor ponies are one of the oldest and rarest British native breeds, thought to be little changed from the wild ponies roaming Britain thousands of years ago. Today they still run free on Exmoor and are used in a variety of conservation grazing projects around the UK. They are a favorite with BBC Countryfile’s Adam Henson who came on the Friday, a great supporter of rare breeds.
If you cannot come to the Devon County show, why not come along and help at one of the other Shows for 2012. At some of the shows you can bring a rare breed animal whether that be chicken or cow - please contact committee members for assistance. NEWS Why not join the Rare Breed Survival Trust? It does not cost much per year and you get the pleasure of knowing that your money is helping retain rare and native breed farms animals across the UK - click here for details Why is the RBST Devon here? Our objective is to educate the people of Devon about rare breeds, why they are useful and what they can do to help the breeds. To that end the group holds many activities during the year. Some are social gatherings, visit to members holdings, to other venues and to the county and other shows. At the shows we have a stand where visitors can meet members and get to know some of the rare breed animals that we have brought along to meet children of all ages. Often members show their animals formally in the show ring, further helping create awareness Click here for events. On top of various shows, we are hoping to have some social events during the year - they are always a lot of fun. Do come along.
