Committee members
The Committee
The Committee consists of the members shown below
- The Chairman,Peter Hayford, who is an expert on Poultry.
- The Treasurer, Nikki Morgan, who is an expert on adding up (and used to have a small flock of Manx Loghtan sheep).
- The Secretary, Liffy Robinson, who is an expert on computers, and who, with husband Mark (also on Committee) has a mixed flock of rare sheep, now kept mostly for their wool.
- The other members are there either because they weren’t quick enough to say they didn’t want to do it any more, or because they have been coerced. They are all, without exception, experts on everything! By definition.
We meet when necessary – about 6 times a year or so. We try to
arrange outings or “jollies” of one kind or another which
we hope might be of interest to the general membership, and we do organise
attendance at various agricultural shows around the County. We have stands
at Devon County, Honiton, Mid Devon, Kingsbridge and as many other shows
as we have helpers to man them. We try to get some animals to exhibit
for people to see, and provide a focal point. We often have a hen and
chicks to provide the “wow” factor, which is so important.
Piglets are alluring, but a little smelly, sheep are good, but you need
several different breeds to provide variety. Bulls and stallions are
splendid, but you need strong pens to keep them in, and calves are delightful,
but often go to sleep! But the point is to try to interest people in
the Trust and its aims, and to keep it, as far as possible, in the public
eye.
The AGM is in January every year – the business for which is
kept to a minimum, following which we have a speaker, who usually gives
us further insight or information about different aspects of “Rare
Breedery”. Far from being boring, it is usually a good evening.
We
don’t have much representation from the North or West of Devon – partly
logistics, perhaps, but we would be delighted to hear from any members
in those areas who would like to get more involved.
We are (we think)
an unstuffy lot, and our shared interest in endangered breeds of farm
livestock makes for interesting and stimulating friendships.
