Peter and Wendy Bates at Partridge Farm

A mid-life crisis precipitated a complete change of career and lifestyle from banking to Rare Breed farming in mid 2005 when we bought Partridge Farm and moved down to Devon from Cheshire. Since then work has hardly stopped as we climb a very steep learning curve while building up a herd of pedigree Large Black pigs and a small herd of the less rare Aberdeen Angus. Our aim is to rear both herds in as natural a way as possible: the pigs are kept outdoors when weather and mud permit and the cattle are grass fed and kept in family groups for as long as we can. Believing firmly that the best way to conserve traditional and rare breeds is to eat them, we sell the meat directly to the consumer as well as selling breeding stock on an occasional basis.

On the left you can see Philip, our Large Black boar. He was named after a good friend in Manchester (it was meant as a compliment!). On the right are Philip’s two wives, Vera and Audrey.
