THE OLDAWAY FLOCK OF RARE BREED SHEEP

We bought our first 12 Manx Loghtan ewes and a ram lamb (the adult ones frightened us novices to death) at the late lamented Show and Sale at Stoneleigh in 1993, and had our first crop of delightful little black lambs in February the following year.
Far from being the boring or self-destructive creatures that we had been told sheep are, we found them tough, resilient, charming and individualistic. The wool is fine, and lovely for hand-spinning, the meat is delicious, and, having used Manx rams on several other rare breeds since then, the resulting crosses have had all sorts of good characteristics.
We now have two Portlands, three Ryelands, two Wensleydales and three Corriedale crosses to add variety, and we are keeping them mostly for their gorgeous fleeces.
